Jeff Roby recently passed away. He wrote and maintained the Green Party of Florida website and wrote many insightful articles over the years giving the big picture. Jeff Roby was a lifelong fighter for justice. His dearly beloved wife Rose bravely carries on.
Though his death came from medical and political incompetence from the state of Florida and Florida’s governor, it is appropriate here to honor his life and how much he gave us.
His writings over the big picture of what was happening were extensive, insightful, and often accurately predicted the future. He accurately predicted China’s “belt and road initiative” and correctly contrasted where it would leave China versus where the U.S. policy of continual warfare would lead us after 20 years.
Though we may have differed sometimes on short term goals, nobody was better at painting the big picture and what should be future goals than Jeff Roby. He was always generous about sharing his writings with the New Progressive Alliance. Links to some of the writings of Jeff and his talented wife appear at the end of this article.
The final article Jeff wrote for the Green Party of Florida was "Ukraine Showdown" and quotes the poem “The Charge of the Light Brigade” by Alfred Lord Tennyson. It describes a futile charge by brave soldiers who did what they did because they considered it the right thing to do. Jeff was very much like that. He did what he considered the right thing to do for humanity and never counted the cost to himself. I know he considered himself blessed for the latter part of his life to have Rose with him for both comfort and the fellowship of a fellow fighter.
Lizzie Adams wrote, “Jeff always seemed to be everywhere, taking it all in and putting out well chosen words in his columns so that we could understand what the real deal was. I miss that. And him. Maybe he’s spread out now over everything, taking it all in. New possibilities.”
Rose Roby - a strong indomitable undefeated woman – gracefully shared Jeff’s final writings from the hospital.
“Notes from a sickbed
…As though the world had been lifted from my shoulders. Indeed, it had. The world has changed. There are new possibilities such had been only dreamed about.
Much to take in, having new possibilities for all of us – JR”
Nobody can ever replace Jeff, but we can and we will fight on. As Lincoln said, “It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced.”
Though he was never pro-military, ironically an old Navy blessing now seems the most appropriate.
“Fair winds and following seas. Rest in peace shipmate. We have the watch.”
