Corporate Overreach

Updated 2024

A disturbing trend is that both nationally and worldwide corporations are taxed less, able to move money outside the country where it is made, less subject to laws, less subject to disclosure, and dramatically contributing towards an unequal society. Both major parties eagerly contribute to this.  The Supreme Court in a series of decisions without legal precedent - such as the 2010 Citizens United case, McCutcheon, Hobby Lobby and others – also speed this disastrous approach.

The reason I have so many references is to show this is a steadily increasing trend that I continuously update. It is not a vanishing blip on the radar. Failure to deal with this trend will have disastrous consequences for the future.

It is no wonder the Unified Platform lists Corporate Accountability/Reform as one of its goals. Making public comments to  the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is also one of the frequent activities of the New Progressive Alliance. The big picture includes corporate overreach, the EconomyElection ReformInfrastructure,  Labor, and Transparency.  The Unified Platform correctly says we must reduce the economic and political clout of corporations, improve corporate citizenship, increase executive responsibility, and require corporations to serve society and democracy while safeguarding the environment.

Improved tax and regulation compliance, enhanced shareholder democracy and governance, and the abolition of corporate personhood will help us reach these goals.

We must also:

• Change corporate charters to reflect a “triple bottom line” orientation that measures social and ecological performance in addition to financial performance. Social responsibility requirements should be comprehensive, strict, and enforceable. Corporations that routinely violate their charters should face dissolution.

• Enforce and expand anti-trust laws at all levels.

• Increase legal jurisdiction over multinational for-profit entities, in accordance with the UN’s evolving “Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.”

Help make your progressive case by using this documentation which is continuously updated. https://www.newprogs.org/make_your_case
