2019 Annual Report

  • The New Progressive Alliance (NPA) continued to expand our organizational outreach and is now allied with 53 active national and international organizations. All allies are listed with internet addresses on our website.
  • By the end of 2019 we had a total of 223 Public Comments in support of our Unified Platform. All Public Comments in full are on our website.
  • Publishing in social media means publishing a reference in Facebook at the New Progressive Alliance, Leftist Third Party and Independent Candidates, Green Party Discussion, and Truth Bomb Activists. Because of problems with privacy and censorship on Facebook, we also publish on Twitter, MeWe, and Ilkmade.
  • The Fossil Fuel industry continues an uninterrupted assault on the Pacific Northwest with one proposed project after another using outright falsehoods and backed up by massive finances. With Columbia Riverkeeper and other allies we have formed a thin Green line which has so far repulsed the fossil fuel assaults on our environment. In January 2019 the New Progressive Alliance fought the latest fracking assault with Public Comment 191. Public Comment 191: January 2019 – Oregon Dept. State Lands-Stop Jordan Cove LNG
  • In January 2019 the New Progressive Alliance published “9 Renewable Energy Highlights of 2018” showing some progress is being made on fighting climate change.
  • Change is possible. In January we published, "What would a yellow vest movement look like in the United States?"
  • In January the New Progressive Alliance supported election reform as described in our Unified Platform with Public Comment 192. The New Progressive Alliance with a coalition of more than 50 national groups are calling on New York Governor Cuomo to follow through on his commitment to enact campaign and electoral reforms. “New York has an unprecedented opportunity to lead the nation—quite literally—on campaign finance reform, with a small donor matching system.” Among the reforms the groups are pushing are early voting, voting by mail, small donor public campaign financing, a reduction in campaign donation limits, and closure of a loophole that allows corporations to virtually give unlimited contributions.
  • In January the New Progressive Alliance made Public Comment 193 to the United States Department of Energy on the required cleanup of Hanford Nuclear Power Plant. A proposed change would allow the federal government to walk away from its obligation to clean up millions of gallons of toxic, radioactive waste at the Hanford, Washington Nuclear Facility. Over half a century of experience throughout the world indicates nuclear energy is not the answer. It is the most expensive, the most delayed, and dangerous.
  • In January we published a Climate Change Performance Index. The United States ranked next to the bottom while Sweden ranked at the top. No country was doing everything it should.
  • In January we published an article that showed some obstacles and strategies in explaining Climate Change: “Flat Earth Cruise Proves Why Humans Will Absolutely, Positively Destroy The Earth.”
  • In January we published an article pointing out that the Green New Deal would do much more than help the environment.
  • In Public Comment 194 in January the New Progressive Alliance with over 280 other organizations wrote the President and Congress about the adverse health impacts of the government shutdown.
  • Sondra Miller is a founding member of the New Progressive Alliance. In January we published her article “Towards a New Women’s Movement.” She contrasts the 2017 Women's March with the Women's Movement of the late 1960s that she was involved in.
  • In January the New Progressive Alliance welcomed the “Declaration for American Democracy” as an ally. Their objectives fit well with our goals on election reform in the Unified Platform.
  • In January the New Progressive Alliance welcomed “Trust for America’s Health” as an ally. Trust for America’s Health promotes optimal health for every person and community and makes the prevention of illness and injury a national priority.
  • In January the New Progressive Alliance with 77 other public interest organizations today sent a letter to U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and U.S. Senate Republicans demanding that they reopen the government immediately; amid a partial government shutdown that is harming families and communities all across the country as well as our environment and economy.
The letter was dated the same day that a CBS News poll found that 71 percent of Americans do not believe the government should be shut down over the president’s demand for a border wall. The poll also found that about one in five Americans has been “personally impacted” by the cutback in services and programs affected by the shutdown.
  • It is ironic that the United States government did not have enough money to operate and had to close, but did find the time and funds to interfere in another country. In January we published “Venezuela: What Activists Need To Know About The US-Led Coup.”
  • Our government being closed did not stop a coup in a foreign country. In January we published “Open Letter by Over 70 Scholars and Experts Condemns US-Backed Coup Attempt in Venezuela.”

In February the New Progressive Alliance with many other organizations asks that CDC be adequately funded with Public Comment 198.
  • Because of mounting and increasing environmental problems, in February the New Progressive Alliance published “Environment in multiple crises – Report.”
  • We face great danger because ignorance has indeed been weaponized by both the left and the right. In February we published “Resisting the Weaponization of Ignorance in the Age of Trump.”
  • Corporate Overreach, economic inequality and global warming will not be fixed or even addressed by the democrats. In February we published “The Movement and the 2020 Elections.”

  • The arresting of whistle blower Assange in April 2019 is a serious blow to worldwide journalism. The ACLU commented, "Any prosecution by the United States of Mr. Assange for Wikileaks’ publishing operations would be unprecedented and unconstitutional, and would open the door to criminal investigations of other news organizations…Moreover, prosecuting a foreign publisher for violating U.S. secrecy laws would set an especially dangerous precedent for U.S. journalists, who routinely violate foreign secrecy laws to deliver information vital to the public's interest." In April 2019 the New Progressive Alliance published an article about the arrest and documentation about the continued war against whistleblowers on ten social media sites.

It was recently revealed that in addition to being the largest methanol plant in the world and using one third of the fracked gas in Washington state, it would supply methanol for burning in China which would be a disaster for the environment. We published documentation in April. Inslee cannot claim to be an environmentalist if he allows this fracked gas/methanol plant to go through.

The amendment would overturn the disastrous Citizens United U.S. Supreme Court decision that allowed unlimited amounts of political spending to influence our elections. In June, New Hampshire became the 20th state to call on Congress to pass a constitutional amendment to address the harm caused by Citizens United. Because of methane's potency—some estimates suggest the greenhouse gas has more than 80 times the warming power of carbon dioxide—environmentalists and scientists have warned the Trump administration's efforts to gut methane regulations could have disastrous consequences.

Fortunately, the courts are only upholding about 8 percent of Trump’s environmental rollbacks because the rollbacks are either illegal or go against established science. The New Progressive Alliance made a formal public comment to the EPA opposing methane rollbacks.

"This administration is ultimately driven by sociopathic disregard for our future."
—Wenonah Hauter, Food & Water Watch

"It would also forestall legal requirements that would have forced the EPA to set rules on emissions from thousands of pre-existing wells and industry sites," the Journal reported.

Environmentalists reacted with outrage to the new proposal. "This administration is ultimately driven by sociopathic disregard for our future," said Wenonah Hauter, executive director of Food & Water Watch.

Earthworks policy director Lauren Pagel called the rule "reckless" and said it will "impact millions of families living with oil and gas air pollution in their backyards."

"This is extraordinarily harmful," Rachel Kyte, United Nations special representative on sustainable energy, said of the Trump administration's proposed rule change. "Just at a time when the federal government's job should be to help localities and states move faster toward cleaner energy and a cleaner economy, just at that moment when speed and scale is what's at stake, the government is walking off the field."

This will not help Alaska’s economy, but will significantly negatively impact the Tongass National Forest which is the world's largest intact temperate rainforest. This Forest is of global importance. Opening it to logging, mining, or oil and gas will have permanent, detrimental consequences. There are good reasons already well documented for the 20 year restrictions to preserve the Tongass National Forest.
  • In November the New Progressive Alliance published “Climate crisis: 11,000 scientists warn of untold suffering” which set out vital signs as indicators of the climate emergency. • In November we published our NPA article on election reform with about 600 references which are continuously updated.
  • In November the International Energy Agency (IEA) just released its highly-anticipated World Energy Outlook publication. Unfortunately, the report is dangerous because it's used by politicians and fossil fuel companies to justify massive new oil and gas projects that will only make the climate crisis worse. The New Progressive Alliance had personally written the International Energy Agency in Public Comment 221 to urge it to recognize the dangers of climate change and its obligations under the United Nations. We put this information out in social media.
  • In November the New Progressive Alliance welcomes WikiLeaks as an ally. WikiLeaks founded by its publisher Julian Assange in 2006 and specializes in the analysis and publication of large datasets of censored or otherwise restricted official materials involving war, spying and corruption. • Despite an incredible, Indigenous-led effort to stop the Dakota Access Pipeline, Energy Transfer completed construction in 2017. In its first six months of operation, DAPL spilled six times. Its climate impact is already staggeringly high. And just when we thought it couldn’t get worse, the news drops that Energy Transfer wants to DOUBLE the pipeline’s carrying capacity – increasing daily shipments to over 1.1 MILLION barrels of oil per day. But this plan requires state permits, which means the governors of Illinois, Iowa, and North Dakota can put a stop to it. In December we urged the governors of Illinois, Iowa, and North Dakota to do the right thing and deny the permits.
  • In December we published “Failed Action on the Climate Crisis Makes Resistance Imperative.” On December 2, the 25th two-week long United Nations climate conference begins in Madrid, Spain. The stated task of the conference, referred to as COP 25 (Conference Of Parties), is to make sure there are plans to meet the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement. We are in an increasingly desperate situation.
  • In December we published our NPA article on our crumbling infrastructure with over 115 references which are continuously updated.
  • Fossil Fuel expansion does not happen because it is a good idea. It happens because banks invest heavily in fossil fuels. • In December we published a reference to the article “The Real Reasons Tulsi Gabbard Did Not Vote to Impeach Donald Trump.” Trump skated on issues which the democrats are equally guilty. Gabbard’s decision had much more to do with a desire to censure Trump over his real crimes: carrying out wars without congressional approval, illegally “occupying and pillaging” Syria, “and continuing to support Saudi Arabia’s “genocidal war” in Yemen.
  • In December we published the New Progressive Alliance article “Diminishing Transparency” with over 135 references and is continuously updated.
  • In December we published the New Progressive Alliance article “Continuous Wars” with over 1,100 references and which is continuously updated.
