2018 Annual Report

The New Progressive Alliance 2018 Annual Report.

We celebrated our eighth year of operation on December 16, 2018!

2018 Annual Report

  • The New Progressive Alliance (NPA) continued to expand our organizational outreach and is now allied with 64 other national and international organizations. All allies are listed on our website.
  • By the end of 2018 we had a total of 190 Public Comments in support of our Unified Platform. In 2018 we made a yearly record of 44 Public Comments. All Public Comments in full are on our website.
  • Publishing in social media means publishing a reference in Facebook at the New Progressive Alliance, Leftist Third Party and Independent Candidates, Green Party Activists, Green Party Discussion, and Truth Bomb Activists. Because of problems with privacy and censorship on Facebook, we also publish on Twitter, MeWe, Ilkmade, and (On JustNform we publish on the NPA site and Truth Bomb Activists)
  • In January Anthony Noel, an award winning journalist and founder of the New Progressive Alliance, reviewed a book on the New Progressive Alliance blog.
  • In January we published an article from a New Progressive Alliance ally on specifics of the transformation we are facing.
  • In January the New Progressive Alliance welcomed two new allies. They are Facebook groups Green Party Activists and Truth Bomb Activists.

-Green Party Activists is an action-oriented group designed for Green Party members to share content that supports the building of the Green Party's electoral power via activism, legislation and electoral campaigns. Green Party Activists is a group for activists within the Global Greens to organize and share content. Green Party Activists fight for People, Planet and Peace over Profit.

-Truth Bomb Activists is a closed group for many former and current Bernie Sanders, Green Party and Independent voters and activists. They cherish and value TRUTH and justice. They are a DEMEXIT Progressive group that believes you cannot have justice without truth, first. Their commitment to truth means they seek and vet information posted.

  • Public Comment 147: January 2018 – Congress – Clean Budget In a Public Comment sent to all 535 congressional offices, 149 groups - including the New Progressive Alliance - called on Congress to free itself from poison pill policy riders. The Public Comment states, “Poison pill riders are unpopular as standalone legislation, and the public opposes using them to roll back public protections…Appropriations bills continue to be misused to undermine essential safeguards through partisan poison pill ‘policy riders’ – provisions that address extraneous and unpopular policy issues. Slipping unrelated and damaging issues into must-pass appropriations bills as a means to win approval is a dangerous strategy for the public.”
  • In January 2018 we published an article indicating hope and progress for the environment in 2017. There remains an uphill battle, but the outlook is not hopeless.
  • In January the New Progressive Alliance welcomed three new allies.

-The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement works to end international support for Israel's oppression of Palestinians and pressure Israel to comply with international law.

-Evonomics   Launched in October 2015 Evonomics has emerged as a powerful voice for the sea change that is sweeping through economics. Evonomics’ content questions traditional economic theory and attracts hundreds of thousands of readers a month, and even more people on the web.

-Washington Environmental Council   The Washington Environmental Council is a nonprofit, statewide advocacy organization that has been driving positive change to solve Washington’s most critical environmental challenges since 1967. Our mission is to protect, restore, and sustain Washington’s environment for all.

  • In January we published a reference to high points of a "No Foreign Bases" conference on YouTube.

  • In February we published an article on our unfortunate direction towards more war.
  • In February we published a book review by Sondra Miller of the book "In the Shadows of the American Century: The Rise and Decline of US Global Power."  We need to understand if we are to avoid a long term economic decline.
  • In February the NPA endorsed Doug Mann for the fifth time. His consistent support of needed educational policies makes him a great candidate for the citywide Minneapolis School Board election on November 6, 2018.
  • In February we published an article about civil rights and the police by Florida activist Jeff Roby.
  • In February the New Progressive Alliance made three Public Comments against pollution and fossil fuel expansion.

Public Comment 148: February 2018 Minnesota Public Utilities Commission – Stop Pipeline

Public Comment 149: February 2018 Gov. Inslee – Stop Methanol Refinery

Public Comment 150: February 2018 Port Kalama – Stop Methanol Refinery

  • In March we published an interesting article on war, cooperation, and history with chilling similarities to our current situation.
  • In March the New Progressive Alliance made two public comments in conjunction with other organizations to all members of the U.S. congress. The Public Comments may be found in full at http://www.newprogs.org/public_comments_2018_147
  • Public Comment 151: March 2018 - Congress Should Oppose Poison Pill Riders (There were 24 organizations which supported this letter.)
  • Public Comment 152: March 2018 - Congress Should Oppose Attacks on Clean Water (There were over 115 organizations which supported this letter.)
  • In March we published an article that correctly said that deregulation kills more people than ISIS ever will.
  • In March we published an article that shows 10 alternatives to Facebook for those that have had trouble with Facebook privacy and censorship policies.
  • In March we published an article about a whistleblower.
  • In April we published an article about the declining state of education and the increasing animosity towards science and education.
  • In April we published "Gentrification and Orange County."
  • In May The New Progressive Alliance supported the BXE (Beyond Extreme Energy) event of sharing/training, art-build and action from June 23-25, in Washington, D.C.

Our communities and our planet are in desperate need of a halt to the permitting and building of all new fossil fuel pipelines and other infrastructure. Communities in the way of proposed new pipelines, compressor stations, storage and export facilities face toxic industrialization, eminent domain abuse, air, land and water pollution, and threats to health and safety. And our disrupted climate can only heal when jobs-creating renewable energy and energy efficiency have displaced fossil fuels, and people power has displaced corporate power. For decades FERC, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, has supported the oil, gas, coal and nuclear industries. It has rubber stamped virtually all gas pipeline permit applications. They have confronted us and the rest of the country with a rigid, unified and punitive refusal to listen to grassroots concerns about communicide and climate change. This has led to a massive build-out of fracked gas infrastructure in many parts of the country, with all of the disruption and danger that come with it.

  • Lake Pend Oreille is the biggest fresh water Lake in Idaho as well as Idaho’s largest and deepest lake. It is home to threatened bull trout and an entire ecosystem of aquatic life; the lake provides a regional drinking water source and is a major tourism asset. In 2017 alone, four trains derailed in this area near waterways. Just a single fossil fuel train derailment could damage and change Lake Pend Oreille forever. BNSF Railway Company wants to build three bridges to carry fossil fuels across the lake. The New Progressive Alliance requested that the Coast Guard perform a full Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) rather than a less rigorous Environmental Assessment (EA). We also requested the Idaho Department of Lands deny BNSF a permit. We did this in the below two Public Comments.

-Public Comment 153: May 2018 - Idaho Dept. of Lands - Stop 3 Rail Bridges

-Public Comment 154: May 2018 - USCG - Stop 3 Rail Bridges

  • The New Progressive Alliance (NPA) is in special consultative status with the U.N. Economic and Social Council. We published an article in May showing how volunteers can attend meetings or write papers for the United Nations through the NPA. We also showed how other organizations (NGOs or Non-Government Organizations) interested in applying for United Nations ECOSOC consultative status should submit their application and required documents on or before the deadline of 1 June 2018 to be considered next year.
  • In the past the New Progressive Alliance has supported with other organizations the California DISCLOSE Act (AB 249). We won a bipartisan victory for the strongest on-ad disclosure law in the nation. It requires that political ads clearly and prominently disclose their top three funders (e.g. each on a separate line on a solid black background on TV ads) and first-in-the-nation follow-the-money earmarking requirements to stop true funders of ballot measure ads from hiding behind layers of committees. In May we supported a follow-up bill of  AB 2188, the Social Media DISCLOSE Act, to have the California DISCLOSE Act also apply to ads on Facebook, Google, Twitter, and other online platforms. See Public Comment 155: May 2018 - Support CA Disclosure AB2188
  • Public Comment 156: In May we joined with 77 other groups to urge Congress to oppose ideological extreme riders which defeat the purpose of the original bill.

The New Progressive Alliance has a long history of advocating for openness and transparency.

  • Public Comment 157: In May we wrote the Canadian Consulate General in Seattle, Washington opposing the Kinder Morgan Pipeline. The Canadian tar sands are one of the largest and dirtiest pools of carbon on the planet. New pipelines like Kinder Morgan would allow for massive expansion of tar sands.
  • Public Comment 158: In May the New Progressive Alliance with 150 other organizations wrote every member of Congress and urged them to reject the $15.3 billion recessions package proposed by the Trump Administration. Basic needs programs have lost ground after years of reductions and these recessions will just make the reductions even more draconian for education and training, child care, housing, health care, and other essential services. It will also make any bipartisan future agreement much more difficult to reach.
  • In May we published an article showing our interference in Venezuela and the unwillingness of the press to report what is happening.
  • In June the New Progressive Alliance has endorsed Gary Swing for Green Party candidate for President of the United States.
  • The New Progressive Alliance has a presence on Twitter starting in June.
  • In June we published an article on a progressive path for the future.
  • In June we published an article documenting fossil fuel falsehoods designed to sow doubt about climate change.
  • In June we published the social media sites we were using and said we had trouble with privacy and censorship on Facebook.
  • We need to look towards long term trends for the future instead of hoping trends remain the same as in the past. Both republicans and democrats fail to do this. In June we published an article to this effect.
  • In June we published an article on the many continuing efforts of the United States expanding an empire.
  • In June we published an article on the need for the Green Party to change or die.
  • In June we published an article on 14 Characteristics of Fascism. There are alarming similarities.
  • In June we published an article on the growing power of renewable energy and the declining power of fossil fuels.
  • In June the New Progressive Alliance welcomed the Black Agenda Network as an ally. The Black Agenda Network features news, commentary, and analysis from the black left.
  • In June we published an article describing how the social media spreads false information.
  • In June the New Progressive Alliance welcomed “Classrooms, Not Computers” and “Center for Political Accountability” as

Center for Political Accountability: American citizens — and even shareholders — don't know which companies are influencing elections, how much they spend, or what the consequences are to this country. The lack of transparency — and the opportunities for bias, preferential treatment, and backroom deals — runs counter to the very concept of our democracy. The Center for Political Accountability seeks corporate political disclosure and accountability.

“Classrooms, Not Computers” seeks to promote a democratic, humane, developmentally appropriate public school environment and to oppose our current corporate public school structure.

  • In June we published an article about the need for whistleblowers such as Julian Assange.
  • In July we published an article about increased gentrification in Florida.
  • In July we welcomed Ilkmade as our 54th Ilkmade is a news sharing site that brings together Political Science scholars, policy researchers and practitioners onto a single platform and provide them the tools to share and discuss ideas and points of view that really matter. It does not have an agenda, but it does allow academic arguments to be made. This is important because as, as Chris Hedges has pointed out in his many books, academia has failed us and we need alternatives.
  • The New Progressive Alliance endorsed actions in June 23 – 25, 2018 in Washington, D.C. by Beyond Extreme Energy and the Poor Peoples’ Campaign. Below are other endorsers.

  • In July 2018 the New Progressive Alliance made Public Comments 168-169 to oppose irrelevant riders in the legislature and support adoption while opposing discrimination in the adoption process.

Public Comment 168: July 2018 – US Senate – Oppose Irrelevant Riders

(This is similar to Public Comment 163 except it is aimed specifically at the US Senate instead of the US House of Representatives.)

Public Comment 169: July 2018 - Congress - Don't Allow Adoption Discrimination

  • In August the New Progressive Alliance welcomed Future Today by Jeremy Leggett as an ally because it gives real relevant news about climate, energy, tech, and the future of civilization.
  • In August we published an article documenting police abuse in Florida, Pinellas Greens Statement on Clearwater Racist Murder: “Gualtieri, get the Hell out of Pinellas!”
  • Robin Hensel is running for Little Falls, MN mayor election on November 6, 2018. She has endorsed the Unified Platform and in August earned the New Progressive Alliance endorsement just as she did in 2014. For details and a full list of those who have endorsed the Unified Platform please visit our website at http://www.newprogs.org/2013_2015_candidates
  • In August we published a book review by Sondra Miller on the book “STAR SPANGLED SHARIAH.”
  • In August we published an article comparing favorable long term trends of China with dis-favorable long term trends of the United States.
  • In August 2018 the New Progressive Alliance made the below two Public Comments concerning the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). We, along with many other organizations, oppose Ms. Kraninger. We also oppose any nominee for CFPB Director who does not have an extensive background in consumer protection.

Public Comment 170: August 2018 – US Senate – No to Ms. Kraninger for CFPB

Public Comment 171: August 2018 – US Senate – No to non-experienced nominee for CFPB
Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs

Ms. Kraninger has no experience with consumer protection or financial services and has pledged to continue the disastrous direction of Acting Director Mulvaney's leadership. In her confirmation hearing, Ms. Kraninger refused to answer questions about her work at the Office of Management and Budget where she oversaw the federal agencies which developed the heartless policy of child separation at the border and the woefully inadequate response to the hurricanes in Puerto Rico, even though her management experience is the only qualification the Administration has given for her nomination.

  • In August 2018 we published an article about a growing coalition both nationally and internationally that is not blindly following the United States.
  • In August 2018 the New Progressive Alliance made the below three Public Comments.

Public Comment 172: August 2018 – US Senate – No Poison Pills    Time and time again, members of Congress attempt to quietly slip in special interest wish list items that couldn’t pass as standalone legislation into must-pass funding packages as poison pill riders. Appropriations bills must not be misused to undermine essential safeguards. Slipping unrelated and damaging issues into must-pass appropriations bills as a means to win approval is a dangerous strategy for the public. Poison pill riders are unpopular and damaging, and the public opposes using them to roll back public protections.

Public Comment 173: August 2018 – No Military Parade - A military parade would be very expensive and accomplish nothing.

Public Comment 174: August 2018 – Corporations Leave ALEC  - ALEC has repeatedly lobbied for corruption and pollution.

  • In August we published an article about how China is leaving the United States behind in renewable energy.
  • In August we published an article saying how tragic it is that Trump is influencing other rich countries to follow his lead on the climate.
  • Climate change, whose effects we are already witnessing, will be the biggest issue future generations will judge us on. In September the New Progressive Alliance welcomes the following three organizations as our allies.

-Climate State gives up to date news and documentation about climate change.

- Dr. Michael E. Mann runs a fine website and is Distinguished Professor of Atmospheric Science at Penn State, with joint appointments in the Department of Geosciences and the Earth and Environmental Systems Institute (EESI). He is also director of the Penn State Earth System Science Center (ESSC)

- “We Don't Have Time” is developing the world’s biggest social network for climate action. Together we can solve the climate crisis. But we are running out of time…

  • Public Comment 175: September 2018 – Washington State Department of Ecology – No to Puget Sound Pipeline   In September the New Progressive Alliance urged the Washington State Department of Ecology to reject any expansion of the Puget Sound Pipeline because of the increased spill risk in our waterways. The New Progressive Alliance also asked for adequate spill response plans because the current draft of the Puget Sound Pipeline (PSP) Emergency Response Plan is woefully inadequate.
  • In September we published an article recalling that the economic crash of 2008 was caused by both parties who then bailed out the rich at the expense of the rest of us.
  • In September we published an article about a resurging Green Party in Florida.
  • In September we published an article documenting how serious climate change is. The longer we put off dealing with climate change the fewer options we will have.
  • Sondra Miller is a longtime supporter of the New Progressive Alliance. In September we published her book review of “Death of the Liberal Class” by Chris Hedges. The media, the church, the Universities, the Democratic Party, and Labor Unions have all let us down. Whether we are helpless victims or just too lazy to do our civic duty, the end result will be the same if we do not change our course.
  • The National Commission on Military, National, and Public Service asked for feedback on National Service and the draft. In September the New Progressive Alliance suggested abolishing the draft and not extending it to include women in Public Comment 176.
  • In September we published an article showing that the causes of the 2008 economic collapse still have not been addressed.
  • A common problem is when fossil fuel companies leave their site after taking maximum profits they leave the clean up to the taxpayers. In September the New Progressive Alliance urged responsible companies be responsible for their own clean up in Public Comment 177: September 2018 - Washington state Ecology - Cleanup Reynolds Aluminum.
  • Two indications of corruption are the insertion of unrelated “poison pill” riders onto legislation and hiding who is paying for promotion of the bills. The New Progressive Alliance with many other organizations opposes these practices. It appears we are finally having successes judging by our recent efforts. Three related Public Comments follow.

Public Comment 178: September 2018 - Congress - Clean Budget.

Public Comment 179: September 2018 – US HOR – No Poison Pills on FSGG

Public Comment 180: September 2018 – Gov. Brown – Media Disclosure Act

  • In September we published an article showing comfortable lies are more easily accepted than uncomfortable truths. This applies to more than just Trump and is a frustration of those who document.
  • Though economics is not a fascinating subject, Sondra Miller points out there is a very real human cost for bad economic policy. In September we published her article.
  • In September we endorsed Gary Swing for US House of Representatives Colorado Congressional District 3.
  • In October we published an article pointing out that there are more issues than just sexual harassment with Supreme Court nominee Kavanaugh.
  • Future generations will regard how we deal with climate change as the most important issue we deal with. In October the New Progressive Alliance is proud to welcome the below three organizations as our allies.

-“Below2°C” Climate change is the most critical issue of our times and the greatest threat to our civilization. If left unchecked, humanity will face runaway climate change with unprecedented or unimaginable catastrophic consequences. Below2°C is premised on the overwhelming consensus that we must not exceed two degrees Celsius of global warming. Our vision is a fossil-free Canada during our grandchildren's lifetime.

-“Climate Liability News” is a not-for-profit news site dedicated to reporting on the issues at the intersection of climate change impacts and law. Those issues include government and corporate responsibility and accountability for global warming and its consequences across society and around the world. Through hard-nosed, uncompromising journalism, we seek to advance a greater understanding and wider public discussion of the role of the law in addressing the wide-ranging impacts of climate change.

-“Inside Climate News” is a Pulitzer Prize-winning, non-profit, non-partisan news organization dedicated to covering climate change, energy and the environment.

  • In October the New Progressive Alliance with other organizations made the below Public Comment opposing the continuous war in Afghanistan. We have now been in Afghanistan longer than Vietnam. The price – both financially and in blood – has been great, but there have been no verifiable good results. Public Comment 181: October 2018 – Trump – Leave Afghanistan
  • In October the New Progressive Alliance made a Public Comment opposing Trump’s plan to use military bases for fossil fuel expansion by exporting coal. This puts an unnecessary burden on the military bases, bypasses the authority of state environmental regulation, and expands the fossil fuel industry using tax dollars. Public Comment 182: October 2018 – Trump stop using the military for fossil fuel expansion
  • In October 2018 the New Progressive Alliance with 121 other organizations made Public Comment 183 urging banks to stop financing fossil fuels.
  • We published in October an interesting article that ties together several issues and touches on issues that go far beyond the Florida border. “What is required is a whole new system!” by Jeff Roby
  • Nothing will be more important to future generations than what we do now about climate change. In November the New Progressive Alliance was pleased to welcome the “3% Project” and “Fossil Banks – No Thanks” as allies.

The 3% Project mobilizes 1,000,000 Canadian youth - that's 3% of Canada - through 5 national tours across 600 schools. It provides youth-friendly and holistic education on climate change and empowers them to take action on solving climate change in their local communities today. As a result, we achieve more consensuses across Canada that climate change is happening, mainly caused by human activities.

Fossil Banks – No Thanks: Climate change, long considered an urgent but future threat, is now with us, and already impacting the lives of millions of people around the world. It's being driven in large part by the continued exploration and burning of coal, oil and gas. To stop a further climate breakdown we urgently need to bring the fossil fuel era to an end. One way to achieve this is to stop large commercial banks from financing the fossil fuel industry. Only massive public pressure will make banks end their support for this climate-wrecking industry. That is why we started this campaign.

  • In November the New Progressive Alliance welcomed the People for Equitable Public Schools as an ally. We need to preserve public education.
  • In November the New Progressive Alliance with Public Comment 184 opposed the State Department approval of the Keystone XL pipeline.
  • In November the New Progressive Alliance with Public Comment 185 urged the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency to oppose fracking by opposing the Tacoma LNG Project.
  • In November the New Progressive Alliance warned in two articles about the continuing incompetence and corruption of the democrats.
  • In November the New Progressive Alliance with Public Comment 186 supported public education and Minnesota’s People for Equitable Public Schools.
  • In November the New Progressive Alliance published two articles on the need for election reform.
  • In November we published an analysis by Gary Swing of the 2018 Green Party election results.
  • In November we offered a free bumper sticker that says "We all do better when We all do better."
  • Female genital mutilation is torture of young females pure and simple. It is not anything like circumcision or ear piercing. It is absolutely shameful that this should be allowed in this country. In November we published an article documenting a judge treating female genital mutilation as a constitutional right.
  • Gary Swing has been supporting and running as a Green since the Green Party’s inception. It is worthwhile to look at his experiences in figuring out the way ahead. In November we published his article “It’s not easy being Green.”
  • The Black and anti-war movements are welcome and needed. In November we published an article welcoming both.
  • Mulvaney has done a horrible job at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and Kraninger - his replacement - promises to be just as bad. In November the New Progressive Alliance with other organizations opposed the decline of the CFRB with Public Comments 187 and 188.
  • The New Progressive Alliance has made many Public Comments supporting an open clean budget and opposing secret deals which encourage corruption. Public Comment 189 made in November 2018 is the latest.
  • In November we posted on Twitter an encouragement to have an open clean budget and not give in to “poison pills” to avoid a government shutdown.
  • In November we published an article that exposed the risks of blindly following either the democrats or republicans without considering alternatives.
  • In December The New Progressive Alliance acting in concert with other organizations has been successful in having organizations withdraw from the evil corrupt lobbying group of ALEC. See https://www.commoncause.org/resource/coalition-letters-to-alec-corporate-funders-over-david-horowitz-involvement-in-alec/
  • In December we tweeted in the social media Twitter that 265 groups called on Congress to pass a budget without any harmful policy riders.
  • In December we published “US and Russia ally with Saudi Arabia to water down climate pledge.” This is pretty pathetic before the rest of the world. Saudi Arabia and Russia?
  • In December we urged in Twitter that banks stop financing fossil fuels.
  • In December we published an article showing the democrats are not serious about combating climate change.
  • In December we published an article urging a clean budget without deceptive riders and for the government not to be shut down.
  • In December we published an article on United Nations efforts on climate change.
  • Public Comment 190: December 2018 – Stop Methanol Refinery. The world's largest fracked gas methanol refinery should not be built! All the danger, pollution, and traffic congestion stays in the United States while the profits and jobs go to China. This is bad on every level. The New Progressive Alliance strongly opposes it.
  • In December we published an article showing from many sources that renewable energy is available right now.
  • In 2018 we published 44 Public Comments - a record!
