There are many areas where both republicans and democrats, while claiming to be different, follow identical policies to the detriment of all. Most areas can be corrected over time, but the environment is different. While other areas can be corrected for future generations, there is a strong and growing consensus among scientists that if we reach certain tipping points, there is no turning back. Future generations may judge us very harshly.
Policy specifics reveal democrats and republicans have long followed the same course while ignoring dangers of a warming planet, a warming acidic ocean, massive water shortages, and other dangers.
The reason I have so many references is to show this is a steadily increasing trend. It is not a vanishing blip on the radar. Failure to deal with this trend will have disastrous consequences for the future.
Climate Change and results already being felt are not a matter for controversy among the overwhelming majority of published credentialed scientists in the field. The danger is if we reach certain tripping points we will not be able to recover which will be disastrous for future generations. Climate Change is a matter of weather and physics. Politicians, rich people, or the failure of people to believe have no effect. If we fail then future generations will likely judge us by this issue more than any other.

Burning coal is one of the highest producers of greenhouse gases and other pollutants. Mountain Top Removal for coal - which destroys mountains forever through explosions and destroys thousands of miles of streams - continues unabated. Coal pollution already worsens air quality resulting in more asthma attacks, heat-related deaths, and respiratory complications. Carbon pollution contributes to warmer temperatures which is speeding the spread of infectious diseases. Coal Plants also emit mercury, sulfur, arsenic, cyanide, soot, and lead which have a disproportionate impact on vulnerable communities. Coal companies are not responsible for these health effects or for clean up when coal ash spills and destroys water supplies.

There is a huge cost to using fossil fuels quite apart from climate change. That cost is rising. It consistently costs the United States well over ten billion dollars a year for fossil fuel subsidies. It rose from 12.7 billion in 2009 to 18.5 billion in 2013. World wide global subsidies are $5.3 trillion dollars (£3.4tn) a year, equivalent to 10 million dollars a minute every day, according to a startling new estimate by the International Monetary Fund. The $5.3 trillion dollar subsidy estimated for 2015 is greater than the total health spending of all the world’s governments.
These subsidies include tax breaks, incentives for production on federal lands (such as royalty fees that haven't been adjusted in 25 years) and tax deductions for clean-up costs. If state subsidies for oil, gas and coal production are also included, the total value climbs to $21.6 billion for 2013. It is estimated that the world will spend an extra $8 trillion over the next 25 years to prolong the use of non-renewable resources, an estimate that may be way too conservative in light of the IMF's estimate of 5.3 trillion dollars in 2015 alone mentioned above. That cost would be completely eliminated by eventually transitioning instead to 100% renewable energy. (100% renewable energy is technically feasible. See below "We Can Do It If We Want To.")
More than just the costs of massively subsidizing the failed fossil fuel business model is involved. There are also externalities - such as healthcare costs due to pollution, government guaranteed loans, environmental destruction through mountaintop removal for coal, tar sands oil drilling, fracking for natural gas, and wars for oil and uranium. Also consistently ignored is the price for adjusting to the effects of global climate change - even if possible - is far far greater than the cost of stopping global warming at this stage.
Unlike the climbing costs of fossil fuels, the cost of renewable energy is declining and has been for decades. One should compare the total costs of fossil fuels with the total costs of renewable energy.

Democrats Are Not the Answer
The democrats led a massive expansion of nuclear energy and opened up off shore drilling three times. Corn Ethanol and "clean coal" continue their renaissance. DeChristopher, a whistle blower for an illegal sale of public lands to the fossil fuel industry, has been prosecuted and sentenced to two years by the Obama DOJ while everyone else who planned and executed the illegal action gets a pass. Also getting free passes was BP for the eleven who died at BPs Horizon and Massey Coal after 29 coal miners died because hundreds of safety violations were overlooked. Despite some small renewable energy investments such as a solar light for a bus station in Georgia, most of our tax money still goes to fossil fuels rather than renewable energy. About 45% of the "environmental stimulus" went to tax breaks. This comes at a time when failure to adopt as other countries have already started to do - some for decades now - will have severe consequences due to both climate change and passing Peak Oil. (2)
The White House Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, -which Obama completely controls - has weakened more than 80% of the rules proposed by the Environmental Protection Agency. This is worse than eight years of the Bush administration.(3)
Even when the EPA proposed minor actions to limit blowing up mountains and other environmental disasters, they all become effective in the distant future when they can be cancelled. The Tar Sands pipeline and delay of smog regulations recommended by Obama's own EPA stand out. Ignoring his own EPA recommendations on smog will cost - again according to his own EPA - 7,200 deaths 11,000 emergency room visits and 38,000 acute cases of asthma each year. See references 22, 23, 25, 35, 44, 45. And yet Obama prosecutes environmental whistleblowers more than any other Presidential Administration in the history of our Republic. (see reference 369) Contrast the drastic action and cost of 3,000 deaths one time in the terrorist attack in 2001 with the lack of any action for 7,200 yearly deaths. Karl Moore points out,
Of all the environmental disaster we face, the biggest may be Obama's appointment of Ken Salazar as Secretary of the Interior. He voted against increased fuel efficiency standards for the U.S. automobile fleet - voted to end protection for offshore oil drilling off of Florida's coast - voted to allow the Army Corps of Engineers to ignore global warming impacts in their water development projects - voted against the repeal of tax breaks for Exxon-Mobil - voted to support subsidies to ranchers and other users of public forest and range lands - threatened to sue the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service when its scientists determined the black-tailed prairie dog may be endangered - fought efforts to increase protection for endangered species and the environment in the Farm Bill, and is ending wolf protection in Wyoming.
Karl Moore also said,
When it comes to bioenergy, the stances of President Obama and Governor Romney are virtually the same. Both candidates have come together on an aggressively pro-biomass and biofuels platform that ignores the resulting increase in lung disease from particulate matter emissions, the contribution to runaway climate change, the watershed degradation, the forest destruction, and the disproportionate negative impacts on low income Americans and communities of color...This President's ABYSMAL record on environmental protections and consumer protections far exceeds that of ANY past President in my lifetime.
Fracking and Natural Gas
The answer is not natural gas obtained by fracking - "in essence, explode a pipe bomb a few thousand feet beneath the surface, fracturing the surrounding rock." See reference 594. (Fracking is also used for uranium mining.) Unregulated by the EPA because of congressional action combined with the support of President Obama, companies refuse to even reveal the chemicals they are "fracking" with, nobody is monitoring the pollution to water and our aquifiers, and nobody is factoring the release of methane as a GHG. Of the 750 chemicals that can be used in the fracking process, more than 650 of them are toxic or carcinogens, according to a report filed with the U.S. House of Representatives in April 2011.

Gulf of Mexico and BP
US Sovereignty was handed over completely to BP for the oil spill resulting in long lasting permanent continuing damage to the environment and a free pass for BP. The full extent of damage is still being discovered.

Monsanto, Bees, and other Companies Above the law
Bees are important for our farming. The USDA estimates that 1/3 of the American diet depends on pollination by honeybees. "Bee pollination is responsible for more than $15 billion in increased crop value each year...Commercial production of many specialty crops like almonds and other tree nuts, berries, fruits and vegetables are dependent on pollinated by honey bees." See reference 737. See also references 390, 452, 497, 504, 517, 679, 737 - 742, 800, 839, 876 - 881, 1007, 1121, 1328, 1745, 1962, 2018.
We are facing a very severe honeybee colony collapse which is very likely related to Monsanto which seems to get a pass from the EPA. Also getting passes are genetically-modified products by companies such as Dow and Dupont which appear to be above the law. Nuclear Energy is not the answer.
Over half a century of experience throughout the world indicates nuclear energy is not the answer. It is the most expensive, the most delayed, and dangerous. No nuclear plant has yet been built that is not over budget and behind schedule. It is also carbon intensive in uranium mining, uranium processing where fracking is used just as for natural gas, building the nuclear plant, and transportation of uranium to and used radioactive waste away from the nuclear plant.
The half-life of the main fuel, U-235, is 703.8 million years. Plutonium is also routinely created in the process of running a nuclear plant. It is highly toxic and its various isotopes have half-lives ranging from about 25,000 to 80 million years. These extremely dangerous substances will require secure storage and protection for a very long period of time and we do not have an agreed upon place to store or agreed way to transport nuclear waste.
Fusion and thorium reactors have always been theoretical but "just around the corner" and every country in the world has backed away from breeder reactors.

Another major risk often ignored is the stability of our oceans, sometimes called the basis for life. The oceans absorb heat and carbon dioxide which makes them warmer and more acidic. In addition to coral reefs, oysters, salmon, and fisheries, there is an alarming drop in plankton, the basis of other sea life and photosynthesis for oxygen both in the sea and over land.

Transportation of Dangerous Fossil Fuel
Perhaps the biggest pass we are giving is for tar sands oil, the XL Pipeline, and the great expansion of unsafe fuel transportation with pipelines, trains, and other devices. See reference 536. The XL Pipeline may have just been a diversion as there has been a huge expansion in other pipelines and dangerous fuel transportation by rail and truck. Even more than transportation, the problem is we are not leaving fossil fuels and dirty Tar Sands oil in the ground in the first place. Dr. James Hansen is correct in calling it "Game Over for Climate." As noted above under "Nuclear Energy is Not the Answer" there is no agreed upon way to transport nuclear waste either and it must remain close to the nuclear power facility as it has for decades.

Water Supply and Aquifers
Standing out as a danger is the complete failure to protect our county's aquifers which endangers our water supply. There is a real question if there will be enough water left for drinking and farming after fossil fuel and nuclear energy get top priority. There is a similar world wide danger. A profit making model has replaced the commons model on clean water.

We can do it if we want to.
There is a better way. There is no scientific barrier that restricts 100% use of renewable energy. There is nothing preventing greatly expanding the use of renewable energy. This is not theory, it has been accomplished in other countries. As far back as 2011 thirteen countries got more than 30 percent of their electricity from renewable energy according to the Paris-based International Energy Agency. In 2012 19% of global final energy consumption was renewable energy. Some have over 50 percent, such as Sweden, Spain, and Canada. Iceland, Norway and other countries with far less resources than the United States have 100 percent. As renewable energy provides a bigger portion of the energy pie, costs go down. With fossil fuels, costs go up. We know this because it has been demonstrated repeatedly in countries which are wisely encouraging renewable energy and thus becoming more competitive than the United States. It is estimated that the world will spend an extra $8 trillion over the next 25 years to prolong the use of non-renewable resources, a cost that would be eliminated by transitioning instead to 100% renewable energy.

In the references below I have documented how serious the problem is that both parties are ignoring. The point is not to get into a blame game. The point is this is a very serious matter for mankind that we need to address in a major way very soon. So far we have not. The overwhelming consensus of credentialed published scientists say the adverse consequences to future generations will be huge.
